Two dead, three injured in tragic West Vancouver crash

Traffic along Highway 1 has reopened, but the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal is heavily congested due to an earlier roadway closure

Apart from the two people who lost their lives in a tragic crash in West Vancouver late Wednesday, three others were injured in the accident, police have confirmed.

At around 11:40 p.m. on June 26, a driver travelling eastbound in the westbound lanes on Highway 1 near Westport Road caused a head-on collision, West Vancouver police said.

Two people were declared dead at the scene, and three were sent to hospital with "serious but non-life-threatening injuries," said Sgt. Chris Bigland, spokesperson for West Vancouver police. Bigland said police couldn't yet specify which people were in what vehicle when the accident happened.

The accident closed all highway traffic bound for Horseshoe Bay and the Sea to Sky west of Exit 4 near Caulfeild Drive. 

While the highway has since been reopened, ferries accessing Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal have been heavily delayed, with staff unable to make it to work on time due to the road closure.

One lane of westbound traffic has reopened on Highway 1, after a multi-vehicle collision Wednesday night left two people dead in West Vancouver.

The accident closed all highway traffic bound for Horseshoe Bay and the Sea to Sky west of Exit 4 near Caulfeild Drive.

But at around 9 a.m. Thursday, West Vancouver police said that one westbound lane reopened on Highway 1, as the final stages of cleanup concluded, and that the second lane would open shortly.

With the closure preventing staff getting to work, ferry traffic at Horseshoe Bay has been .

Two people have died in a head-on collision on Highway 1 in West Vancouver, according to West Vancouver Police. 

At approximately 11:40 p.m. on Wednesday, June 26, a driver travelling eastbound in the westbound lanes near Westport Road caused a head-on collision, "resulting in the death of two people and sending the remaining passengers to hospital," according to a statement from West Vancouver Police.

The Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service is on the scene investigating, with westbound traffic on Highway 1 closed at Westport Road. Alternative routes are available via Exit 4 and Marine Drive. Access to the Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal is blocked at this time, police say.

"West Vancouver Police Department extends our deepest condolences to the family and friends of those impacted and thanks the West Vancouver public for their patience and cooperation," the release stated.
