Reign of rain: Vancouver may not catch a sunny break this week

Just how much rainfall can we expect in the 7-day Vancouver forecast?

Vancouver may not get any relief from the rain this week.

V.I.A.'s is predicting an above 90 per cent chance of rainfall for Tuesday, March 11, and tomorrow, including up to 25 mm expected for Wednesday.

Every Vancouver neighbourhood could experience that total accumulation from  and to ,  and . The  and areas are the exceptions with around 15 mm of rainfall in the forecast for Wednesday.

However, the rain may be reduced to showers for the rest of the week with less than 10 mm predicted for Thursday.

Winds are also expected to gust between 10 and 15 km/h for Vancouver, potentially shifting from west to northeast.

Temperatures may reach a high of 10 C by Thursday along the south and east regions of the city, including ,  and .

Every neighbourhood, meanwhile, could see the mercury drop to a low of 4 C.

Extreme weather shelters opening

Vancouver opened eight extreme weather shelters (see list below) this past weekend as a result of the prolonged rainfall.

The shelters were put in place Friday night. Tonight is the fifth and final evening of the latest activation. 

According to the city, rainfall of  meets the criteria to potentially activate shelters:

Directions Youth Services Centre

  • Hours of operation: 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.
    • Will provide overnight accommodation to 10 individuals (ages 13-24, all genders served)

Aboriginal Front Door

  • Hours of operation: 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.
    • Entrance at 205 East Hastings St.
    • Will provide overnight accommodation to 34 individuals (ages 19 and older; couples welcome)

The Salvation Army Belkin House

  • Hours of operation: 9 p.m. to 7 a.m.
    • Will provide overnight accommodation to 25 individuals (ages 19 and older)
    • 18 men and seven (7) women

OPS Overnight EWR Shelter

  • Hours of operation: 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.
    • Access via front entrance
    • Will provide overnight accommodation to 20 individuals (ages 19 and older)

Commercial-Hastings EWR

  • Hours of operation: 8:30 p.m. to 7:15 a.m.
    • Site entrance is through the front gate
    • Will provide overnight accommodation to 15 individuals (ages 19 and older)

Kiwassa Neighbourhood House EWR Shelter

  • Hours of operation: 8:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.
    • Site entrance is on the right side of the building (East facing)
    • Dinner, breakfast, and snacks served.
    • Will provide overnight accommodation to 20 individuals (ages 19 and older)

Marpole Neighbourhood House EWR Shelter

  •  
  • Hours of operation: 9:30 p.m. to 7 a.m.
    • Site entrance is through courtyard door (South facing)
    • Will provide overnight accommodation to 30 individuals (ages 19 and older)

The Nest

  • Hours of operation: 8 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.
    • Entrance at white gate. Ring buzzer for access.
    • Will provide overnight accommodation to 20 individuals (ages 19 and older; transgender, gender diverse and two-spirit people only)
    • Nest to remain open nightly as a temporary winter shelter for the rest of the season starting Saturday
