Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is partnering with an Alberta-based initiative to combat human trafficking.

The airport in Richmond announced Thursday it will launch a mandatory training program for staff to recognize and respond to signs of human trafficking as a part of their collaboration with #NotInMyCity (NIMC).

YVR said it will also lead awareness campaigns and show solidarity against trafficking and child sexual exploitation.

“Human trafficking, identified as one of the fastest-growing crimes in Canada, particularly affects those under 25 years of age, with transportation corridors frequently exploited by traffickers,” read the announcement.

“YVR recognizes the crucial role airports play as front-line defenders against this violation of fundamental human rights.”

The airport also noted it will display posters and decals with the phone number for the Richmond detachment of the RCMP throughout the terminal for victims or witnesses of human trafficking to call.

Seven other airports, including Kelowna International, have also committed to addressing the issue through a with NIMC.
