Vancouver's biggest airport doesn't anticipate local temperatures will affect its operations but travellers should check conditions in their destinations.

Environment Canada issued a  for Metro Vancouver over the weekend as temperatures soared into the low 30s. The above-average heat is expected to persist through Tuesday or Wednesday, with overnight lows only dipping to the late teens.

Other parts of the country, such as the Greater Toronto area, face similar temperatures but elevated humidity, making them feel closer to the late 30s; there is also a risk of thunderstorms.

Toronto Lester B. Pearson International Airport warned travellers its operations might be impacted by the unseasonably warm weather, advising of possible flight delays.

"In this heat, our safety focus is to provide adequate breaks to allow outdoor workers to stay cool. This means your plane could take longer than expected to reach the gate, or your luggage processing could be delayed," the airport wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

Will the heat wave impact flights at Vancouver International Airport?

Vancouver International Airport (YVR) spokesperson Tanya Crowell said the airport doesn't expect the heat wave to impact regular operations.

"In addition to our standard health and safety procedures, as the daytime highs are expected to hit the low to mid-30s, we have installed outdoor misting stations to help keep our airside employees cool and hydrated throughout the heat of the day," she told V.I.A.

Travellers headed to airports facing extreme heat or other extreme weather should check conditions in Vancouver and at their destination before they depart home.

Crowell says YVR continues to monitor and is "aware of thunderstorms and hurricane winds that are causing delays for flights inbound and departing Dallas/Fort Worth International, Tampa International, and Orlando International."

Pearson Airport says its flights to Mexico and Jamaica have mostly returned to normal

Travellers should check their flight status with their airline or  before coming to the airport.
