Choo, choo! TransLink releasing limited number of 'Compass Mini-Trains'

Watch a video of the new item that lights up when tapped.

You can hop on your next SkyTrain in Vancouver by paying with a "Mini-Train."

Fresh takes on TransLink's compass cards have elicited a sweeping response from Metro Vancouverites in the past -- and the latest style will no doubt inspire locals to line up for the adorable new item.

The transportation authority is introducing the Compass Mini-Train as a new way for commuters to pay for transit in the Lower Mainland. It is a miniature model SkyTrain that can attach to a keyring, and works like the Compass Card and Compass Wristband, allowing customers to tap in and out on transit.

But the Compass Mini-Train has a unique feature that sets it apart from other Compass offerings: it lights up when tapped.

“The Compass Mini-Train is a new and exciting addition to the Compass product lineup,” says TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn. “Compass Wristbands and Minis have been very successful and I’m sure customers will appreciate the fun and quirky design of the new Compass Mini-Train.”

Starting Wednesday (Dec. 14), TransLink will release 3,000 blue adult Mini-Trains and 2,000 orange concession Mini-Trains. To allow as many people as possible to take advantage of the new offering, sales will be limited to four Mini-Trains per person.

Just like any other Compass product, there is a $6 refundable deposit when purchasing your Mini-Train.

Customers can reload online, at a Compass Vending Machine, by phone, or in person.

Visit the TransLink Customer Service Centre inside Waterfront Station (Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) to pick up a Compass Mini-Train while supplies last.

TransLink is also offering a variety of , with a special selection of holiday gifts.
