Catherine Trueman is all about motivating women to be the best version of themselves. Her day job is running a home-based Stella & Dot business styling women with accessories and clothing, while also helping other women to launch and grow their own business.
“I love being able to help women look and feel their best,” she says. “When that happens they have the confidence to take on the world.” With that spirit in mind, it's only natural that Catherine would found an organization in 撸奶社区dedicated to helping out those in need. It's called 100 Women Who Care Squamish, and it brings together community members who want to make a difference.
The way it works is this – women from around the town commit to coming to a meeting four times a year, each time bringing a donation of one hundred dollars. Throughout the months previous to that meeting, members and community organizations send in names of charities they think deserving of a financial injection from the group. Before the meeting, Trueman puts the names in a hat, and picks three names at random. She notifies the three organizations, and they then give short, personal presentations to the 100 women at the meeting about what they would do with the money if chosen. Each person chooses with her heart, and vote on which group they would like to give the money to. The group has given over $50,000 since July 2017.
Past recipients of the money have included the Sea to Sky SPCA, the Sea to Sky Community Hospice, Big Brothers Big Sisters Sea to Sky, the Howe Sound Marine Search and Rescue Society, 撸奶社区Volunteer Drivers for Cancer, and the 撸奶社区Food Bank Society. Trueman notes their most recent special recipient was the Hanson family – a 撸奶社区local; Muriel Hanson recently passed away from cancer, leaving her two young daughters to be raised by their grandmother. The group contributed to renovate the grandmother's home, so that she could adequately care for the little girls. She says that the group's generous spirit really shone:
"One thing I loved the most [in that meeting] was the women saying, 'I've got a company where we do electrical or plumbing, and we will donate our services.' Someone else owns a mattress store, and offered to donate mattresses. All these other connections that happened between the women and their businesses, to help out this family in other ways, was truly heartwarming.”
