Work on the Coastal Gaslink natural gas pipeline across northern B.C was 88.4 per cent complete, as of the end of April, according to information released by TC Energy on Tuesday.

Construction of the 670-km natural gas pipeline from west of Dawson Creek to Kitimat employed 4,410 workers as of the end of April, including 1,086 based out of Parsnip Lodge north of Prince George.

“As overall project progress nears 89 (per cent) and we approach the midway point of our final year of construction, Coastal GasLink continues to safely overcome challenges and complete significant milestones that will help supply Canadian-made, lower-emission energy to the world,” the TC Energy statement said. “With record breaking high temperatures and higher than average snowpack causing rapid spring melt, Coastal GasLink is adjusting work plans and implementing additional erosion and sediment control (ESC) mitigation measures based on professional recommendations to protect the environment.”

Roughly 700 people were employed doing erosion control along the route, the statement said.

A total of 612 km of pipe had been installed along the route. Pipe installation was competed in two of eight sections, and is more than 94 per cent complete in three other sections.

More than 70 per cent of the water crossings along the route were complete as of the end of April, the TC Energy update added.
