Welder responds to story

Letters

Editor,

In reference to the news article May 27 in regards to the welding on the Sea to Sky Adventure Centre.I would like to respond to a few of the statements made in the report.

Mayor Ian Sutherland states "we have a couple of complaints from local people not getting contracts for work."

I cannot comment on behalf of other businesses, but in our situation, even after submitting the required "Expression of Interest" to the management company (in response to the ad in The Chief last fall), our business was never contacted for the opportunity to bid for the job.

How does a management company make the following statements (of which the letter(s) are on file at Municipal Hall), without ever speaking with the business to determine such?

The management company of this project stated: "As part of our brief as construction manager, we were aware that businesses in the community of Squamish, that were capable, competent and competitive were to be incorporated into the bidding process for needed material and services in the work.following examination of needed components, and discussion with the design and construction team, it was felt that the business was not capable of working at the speed, and volume required, and with the computer interface needed for this work. It was also felt that competitive pricing would not be forthcoming."

It is my understanding that the purpose of the federal grant from the Softwood Industry Community Economic Adjustment Initiative (SICEAI) is to "help forest-dependent communities create opportunities for economic development in order to stimulate investment and job creation", for which the community of 撸奶社区qualifies. This opportunity appears to have been ignored for a number of local businesses.

For anyone to contend that the removal of the mentioned brackets would in no way compromise the structural integrity of this building is ridiculous.

Thank you for the opportunity to set the record straight.
