Bailey Goldstone, Lucas Cruz crowned Canadian downhill champions

Several other Sea to Sky riders landed on a podium, including Anthony Shelly who won the U17 expert men's race

When all was said and done in Fernie, Bailey Goldstone of Squamish and Pemberton's own emerged as queen and king of the 2023 Canadian Downhill Championships.

For Goldstone, it is her second career (and second consecutive) victory at nationals. She clocked a time of three minutes and 9.46 seconds, putting her ahead of Emmy Lan from Comox (3:12.70) and Ainhoa Ijurko of Brackendale, B.C. (3:14.12) in the UCI elite women's race.

The 'Cruz Missile' was likewise in fine form this past weekend, sprinting to the finish line for gold (2:33.60). In so doing, he led a medal sweep for Norco Factory Team in the elite men's category, edging out Sechelt's Mark Wallace (2:33.73) and Kirk McDowall from Anmore, B.C. (2:35.46).

"It was an amazing day for me and it was extra special to have all three of us on the podium with the new Norco DH bikes!" said Cruz on his Instagram account after the race. "The engineers and team got to witness all of their hard work put to the test. Thank you all friends and family, fans, teammates, coaches and competitors for giving me the best birthday yet! I cannot wait to wear this sleeve with pride!"
