There are more places for local seniors to recreate.
The District of ߣÄÌÉçÇøhas announced that cultural programming for the 55+ community will take place in space at Westwinds, Squamish's newest seniors residence.
The newly minted Westwinds Seniors opens to the public today, (Tuesday, Sept. 6), with programs set to begin Monday, Sept. 12, according to a District news release. The facility is located at 38275 Third Avenue, directly behind the Chieftain Centre, with 18 visitor parking stalls, two accessible parking stalls and two drop-off parking stalls for patrons of the programming space, with additional street parking and transit stops nearby.
“A third programming space for our 55+ community, in addition to Brennan Park Recreation Centre and The 55 Activity Centre, will help to ensure we continue to meet the diverse needs of our community,” said Mayor Karen Elliott in the release. “We are very pleased to make this space at the Westwinds available in order to bring a range of activities and programming that reflects the interests and perspectives of our growing aging population directly to where they live, and in the heart of downtown Squamish.”
The Westwinds building includes a 2,413 square foot multi-purpose room and a 1,466 square foot fitness and rehab space with equipment to support physical activity programming, the release states.
A non-commercial kitchen space is available for coffee, tea and light refreshments.
A variety of arts, culture and education programming, as well gentle and rehabilitation fitness, such as Neuro-Fit, Re-Fit and yoga, will be offered, the District said.
According to the release, the programming offered was informed in part by the results from a public survey that collected feedback on recreation and culture programming for residents aged 55 and older.
A new citizen-based will form this fall to guide the future of recreation and culture programming for the local 55+ community.
The District says the committee will collaborate with and provide recommendations to District staff on programs and focus on the delivery of programs across Brennan Park Recreation Centre, The 55 Activity Centre, and the Westwinds facility.
