The 撸奶社区Estuary is fully reopened (Nov. 25).

One of Squamish’s most popular trail networks has been reopened (Nov. 25) following two bear attacks that prompted authorities to shut it down.

In a municipal wildlife alert from the District of Squamish, the Conservation Officer Service announced that the 撸奶社区Estuary trail network, also known as the Wildlife Management Area, is once again open to the public.

Prior to the announcement, the network had been closed for weeks as a result of two separate bear attacks on pedestrians. These attacks, which both occurred on Nov. 3, were believed to be the result of a mother bear and yearling being startled by people passing through a trail.

In at least one case, the mother and cub were disturbed while they were feeding.

No further activity or conflicts have been reported since the closure.

With reopening, authorities are urging the public to be cautious, travel in pairs or groups, and make as much noise as possible.

All dogs are required to be on a leash in the Estuary.

Authorities are asking people to report any wildlife sightings or encounters to the Conservation Officer Service Hotline at 1-877-952-7277.
