There's big news in the air for Squamish's only pipe band.
Not only is the Diamond Head Legion Pipe Band changing its name to the Black Tusk Caledonia Pipe Band, they're also planning to head to the 2005 World Pipe Championships in Scotland.
They've got the talent, but will need plenty of financial help to get there.
The band also wishes to extend its membership, to increase the selection of venues to play at, and to promote the Sea to Sky corridor at the Worlds.
While in Scotland, they will also be involved in a fundraising effort for cancer, as part of a 20,000-man band in Edinburgh to raise money for the Marie Curie Cancer Care.
The band is embarking on a fundraising program to help with financial obligations for their international commitment. The band will be hosting a Burger and Beer fundraiser on Saturday, June 12 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Grizzly Bar and Grrrill. A silent auction, door prizes and raffle prizes will be part of the evening, as will music from the live band Long Run.
Leading up to the Worlds in Scotland, the band will need to upgrade some instruments, purchase new uniforms, as well as pay for flights to and accommodations in Scotland.
The band is a family-oriented, non-profit society with the majority of musicians under the age of 18. They currently have seven pipers, five drummers, and four students practising for the prestigious event.
