ABOUT TOWN: Stars come out at youth, men's talent shows

The 12th annual Star Search youth talent night takes to the stage of the Eagle Eye Theatre tonight (June 4) at 7:30 p.m. This event that showcases the talent of our young people each year is presented by the Howe Sound Arts Association.

The variety of acts includes soloists, a trio of singers, bands, dancers and piano and violin solos. Tickets at $8 each are available at Mostly Books, Billie's Bouquet and Highland Video.



The day after the youth talent search, the Men of Sea to Sky take to the same stage Saturday (June 5) for another talent night to benefit 10 deserving local charities. The Men of Sea to Sky Ladies' Night is presented by the 撸奶社区Rotary Club and some tickets at $100 each are still available from Rotary Club members, participating charities or by calling 604-898-5902.



Despite the worst flooding in over 50 years in October 2003, the North Vancouver Outdoor School is ready to celebrate the full recovery of its facility with its annual Open House this Sunday (June 6) from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This is a family affair and there is much to see and do, including visiting the salmon hatchery, canoeing, archery, paper making and face painting. There will be a First Nations Pow-Wow and bannock making and also a silent auction. Take along a lunch or check out the concession stand. The open house is on rain or shine. Please remember to keep your pets at home that day.



The Still Dancing dance studio alternates its recital each year between 撸奶社区and Whistler. This year, the recital "Road to Oz" will have two performances at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Whistler's Myrtle Philip Elementary School Saturday (June 5). The recital is sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of 撸奶社区and Whistler with proceeds to charities. There will be 130 dancers in the recital this year. Tickets at $10 for adults and $6 for students and seniors are available at Club Flex and Dansez La Vie on Cleveland Avenue.



The Gallery Singers from Vancouver will be in concert at St. John's Anglican Church on Sunday (June 6) at 3 p.m. This chamber choir, directed by Derrick Christina, will present madrigals and folk songs from the 15th to the 20th centuries. Also on the program will be a special performance by the St. John's Children's Chorus directed by Tracy Stuchbery. Tickets are available at Billie's Bouquet or at the church at $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and students and children six and under admitted free.



There is a garage sale at the Cedman Lounge seniors' complex at 38209 Third Ave. Saturday (June 5) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.



The 撸奶社区Food Bank will hold its monthly distribution Wednesday (June 9) from 12 noon to 1 p.m. at the Elks' Hall on Second Avenue.



A garage sale sponsored by the 撸奶社区United Church Women will be held in Brackendale Saturday (June 5) from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The address is 41638 Government Rd. (across from the Brackendale General Store). There will be signs and balloons directing you to the location.



Des Kennedy is a well-known gardener but he also has a great sense of humour, which will be evident during his presentation at the Howe Sound Inn and Brewing Company on Wednesday (June 9) at 7:30 p.m. The 撸奶社区Gardeners invited the community to this presentation, where Mr. Kennedy will show "An Island Gardener in the Gardens of Ireland" followed by "The Ten Commandments of Gardening". There are 100 tickets available at $6 for members and $9 for non-members at Anna's Attic, Billie's Bouquet and at the door.



A special family event at the 撸奶社区Public Library Saturday (June 5) is the Harry Potter Party from 1 to 3 p.m. You are invited to come and enjoy a magical experience by taking lessons in herbology, potions and care of magical creatures. Visit Honeydukes' candy store and check with Mr. Ollivander to receive your own magic wand. Also, see Harry Potter's bed under the stairs at #4 Privet Drive. Admission is free but you are asked to pre-register by phoning 604-892-3110.



There is a special parish celebration with the Bishop at St. John's Anglican Church on Wednesday (June 9) at 5 p.m. A blessing of the Labyrinth and Memorial Garden will take place along with Eucharist. Games for the children and a barbecue will follow and everyone is invited.



The 撸奶社区Music and Art Exchange Society's summer art programs are for children ages seven to 13. There will be visual arts camps in drawing, painting or crafts and an art discovery camp. All classes will take place at the SMART Exchange space at the Newport Gallery on Cleveland Avenue. Registra-tion dates are June 14-18. If you wish more information, please call 604-892-1080.



Entering kindergarten is an exciting time for children. The Putting Children First Kindergarten Health and Childcare Fair is next Saturday (June 12) at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre arena from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. It will be an informative and fun time for parents and children. Donations to the 撸奶社区Food Bank would be appreciated.
