Theo Weber of Howe Sound Secondary School will represent the Northwest Lower Mainland Region in the Skills Canada provincial cabinetmaking competition next week after winning the recent regional event.
Weber and three other entrants -Manny Parra, Reece Black and Ryan Fraser -competed in the regional contest on March 29 in Squamish. They had six hours to complete a wooden box with sliding lid using a variety of joinery techniques, HSSS instructor Vicki Schenk wrote in an email to The Chief.
A panel made up of Cam Cairns, Nathan Webb and Dave Drobczyk, all local carpenters and cabinetmakers, judged the students on a variety of criteria including safety, use of the materials, accuracy, fit and finish.
Weber was awarded the gold medal. He will represent the region (which includes secondary schools in Vancouver, the North Shore, the Sunshine Coast and the Sea to Sky Corridor) at the B.C. competition in Abbotsford on Wednesday, April 18. Winners at that competition will advance to the national competition next month in Edmonton.
