Squamish men are being invited to stand up and be counted in the fight to eradicate violence against women at an upcoming event in downtown Squamish.
The Howe Sound Women’s Centre Society is organizing the annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event on Saturday, July 5.
The family event will see men gather pledges and bring awareness to the issue of gender violence by walking a loop around downtown ߣwearing women’s red, high-heeled shoes, collecting donations along the way.
While it’s part of an international movement, each pledge walk is organized and operated locally for the benefit of the local community, Howe Sound Women Centre’s resource development manager Megan Reynolds told the ߣ last year.
“It’s a really neat concept because it’s scalable and yet it has a powerful and consistent message about preventing violence in our communities,” she said.
Friends and family are encouraged to march as well in support of the well-heeled participants. Participants are urged to dress as they normally would, particularly in uniforms or work gear. Participants are urged to pre-register and start collecting pledges, or registration is also available on July 5 starting at 10:30 a.m., with the walk beginning at 11.
