With school back in session, police are reminding drivers to obey the 30-kilometre school zone speed limits.

“With school starting, people returning to work, and weather and daylight changes, police wish to remind drivers to observe posted speed signs in school zones,” reads a news release from 撸奶社区RCMP, which was issued on Sept. 6. “The legal speed limit in these zones is 30 kilometres per hour, with some areas having specific hours of effect posted on the sign.”

Officers also urged people to yield to school buses.

“When a school bus is stopped and has flashing red lights and stop sign engaged on the left-hand side of the bus, drivers need to stop so students can safely exit the bus,” reads the release.

As part of traffic safety priorities, local detachments are now focusing on school zone enforcement.

Cpl. Angela Kermer said that all drivers have a role in keeping students safe.

“Especially with school buses, drivers unnecessarily risk their convenience over someone else’s safety,” Kermer said in the release.
