SSCS' family drop-in returns

Initative to host upcoming workshops

After a summer hiatus, the Sea to Sky Family Drop-In is re-opening its doors.

The Sea to Sky Community Services' program aims to connect ߣÄÌÉçÇøfamilies with each other and local resources, said Julia Bresalier, the drop-in program's facilitator. It is a weekly event with arranged workshops, she said. The presentations focus on parenting and deal with a range of topics from child development to resolving sibling conflicts. On site child care is provided for parents attending the talks.

The drop-in will run on Tuesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. First on the presentation list is child and youth therapist Julie Miller. On Oct. 4, Miller will give a talk titled Child and Youth Mental Health: Healthy Behaviour and Warnings Signs.

The second workshop, taking place on Oct. 11, will be hosted by occupational therapist Tara-Leigh Cain, who will focus on developing children's handwriting and fine motor skills.

Bresalier is always hunting for more resources and volunteers, she said. She's looking for community partners, which could enable the drop-in program to present workshop series on specific subjects. Bresalier also welcomes ߣÄÌÉçÇøresidents to come and add their talents to the list.

"The vision is to engage the community in defining how things evolve," she said.

Before the summer break, between two and six families would regularly attend the event. A wide variety of families partake in the workshops, Bresalier said, something hopes to broaden.
