For the first time in the seven-year local history of the event, the Rotary Club of 撸奶社区has joined forces with the 撸奶社区Hospice Society to make this year the biggest Hike for Hospice event ever.
It all goes down on May 4 at the Brennan Park overflow fields adjacent to the Loggers Sports Grounds. Two loop routes will be available this year. One is a gentle walking route to the Rotary Community Garden and there鈥檚 also a more energetic hike to the top of the Smoke Bluffs. Both routes will return to the overflow fields at Brennan Park.
For Rotary Club of 撸奶社区president Mike Nasu, it was an easy decision to jump on board to support the cause.
鈥淥ur slogan is, 鈥楪ood communities have hospice,鈥欌 he said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 important and we think this in an area that has been overlooked and it鈥檚 time for it to go to the forefront.鈥
Nasu explained that it鈥檚 all about raising awareness and eventually helping to bring those needed beds to Squamish.
鈥淭he reason why we got involved is to raise awareness to all the good work the hospice society and its volunteers do in taking care of those who are in need,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e trying to get the community involved and excited with this fun family event.鈥
The event will be catered, include live music and will feature a bouncy castle and other on-site activities for the entire family. In addition, MLA Jordan Sturdy and several members of DOS council are expected to attend.
鈥淭his is the first year that we鈥檝e really got behind them and we really want to help them out,鈥 he said. 鈥淗aving clients and family members pass over the years makes you realize how important palliative and hospice care is 鈥 it鈥檚 a cause that needs support in this community.鈥
The goal for the event is to raise $50,000 and all money raised will remain in Squamish.
鈥淭he funds raised are essential to supporting the programs that our dedicated volunteers are creating to support our community but as important is the energy and moral support that hundreds of hikers will create,鈥 Nicole Carothers of the 撸奶社区Hospice Society said in a statement. 鈥淥ur volunteers are tireless angels quietly working in the background during the most difficult hours for many. It will mean so much to them to have a large community turn out to this event this year.鈥
