There's a brand new feel to the annual Relay for Life event in 撸奶社区for 2013.
The location is changed, the time commitment has been tweaked, the date has been moved from June to Sept. 21 and the 撸奶社区event has a brand new twist an obstacle course.
The Sea to Sky Challenge family obstacle course will see participants slide down a giant slip and slide, bike and run around the Don Ross Secondary School (DRSS) track and then slackline to victory.
This is something that's brand new and totally unique for Squamish, said Brooke Sherwood from the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS). We wanted to reflect the community and it's going to be a lot of fun. Cancer is tough and going down on a slip and slide not as tough.
Another big change is instead of walking all night long, participants will take to the track for 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. This year's event is taking place at DRSS instead of Brennan Park where it has occurred in the past. Organizers also moved the event to September instead of June as in previous years.
We moved it to September because there was a feeling with all the other events in the corridor that it was kind of getting overlooked, Sherwood said. September seemed like a better fit.
The obstacle course is expected to be a big draw for the event and there is a kids' race at 3 p.m., followed by a battle between 撸奶社区RCMP and the Cops for Cancer group at around 4 p.m. Cops For Cancer's Tour de Coast will be riding through the area, and those involved in the ride made the impromptu challenge.
Sherwood said the obstacle course will be open for everyone in the general public from 2 to 4 p.m. and anyone can try it out for a $5 fee. All proceeds from the two-hour bloc go towards cancer research.
Organizers are also inviting the community to come check it all out during the open house from 2 to 4 p.m.
We want to invite the people who can't join us for the full 12 hours to experience what the event is all about with a 撸奶社区flair, Sherwood said.
She added that there will be food trucks, a bouncy castle, live music and several other activities for the entire family during the open house.
Sherwood said the event is still looking for teams and additional volunteers. She noted that participation is slightly down from last year but she's hoping to equal the mark of $85,000 raised in 2012.
We're trying to hit the same amount as last year but there's way less teams, she said. It's too bad. We understand that people have a lot of choices in what they support but many people in 撸奶社区use the CCS services. We're hoping to get that support and we're not giving up.
