Railway park cleans up

Group of park volunteers helps beautify highway

Volunteers from the West Coast Heritage Railway Park spent a sunny Saturday (Aug. 25) taking out the trash.

The group became the first organization in the region to take part in the Adopt-A-Highway program and proved their dedication to the cause by helping beautify the highway section from Garibaldi Way to Clarke Drive.

"It was really good," said Danielle Fourchalk, the park's guest services supervisor. "It took about two hours in total and our team of 12 volunteers split the highway into three different sections."

Fourchalk, who was part of a group that tidied up a section from Clarke Drive to McDonald's, said the group managed to fill five bags with garbage. In total, the volunteers filled 12 bags.

"We don't know when the last time anyone cleaned it up," Fourchalk said. "But we plan on coming back out a few times a year."

"We have taken this role as we believe we are contributors to the well-being of Squamish," Ken Tanner, Railway Park general manager, wrote in an email. "And we want to present our community in the best possible light."

It's not known when the next time the group will tend to the highway but Fourchalk said anyone can help out but must sign a waiver beforehand. She added that the park is always looking for volunteers and that those who are interested can contact the park.
