Quest University is hosting a garage sale and is inviting the entire community to search for some hidden treasures.
The inaugural end-of-school year student garage sale is taking place Saturday (April 21) and student Michalina Hunter said that after sorting through students' undesirables for hours last year, the garage sale was a logical step.
"Last year was our first graduating class so we had a bunch of students moving out after their four years, and in their residences there was piles and piles of garbage mixed in with usable items," she said. "It was basically really horrifying and we don't want the same thing to happen this year."
Organizer and staff member John Scheunhage said Carney's ended up with 17 large full bags that had to be taken away and the school made nine trips to local charities. Hunter said the event has Quest students buzzing.
"I've been talking to a bunch of students and they're getting really excited about it," she said. "They think it's a good idea and I'm excited about it too."
Scheunhage said the event will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at one of the residence buildings on campus.
"To make it convenient for our students, it will be at the building closest to the road," he said. "If it's crappy weather we can use the covered garage, and if it's nice we have a patio area. There will be signs and balloons so anyone driving up can find it easily."
According to both Hunter and Scheunhage, items left behind by students last year included clothes, furniture, dishes, sports equipment, electronic devices and kitchen gadgets. In addition to students, staff and faculty are invited to sell their extra things.
Students can either sell items on their own and pocket the money or allow organizers to sell their items for them. Proceeds from the event will go to 撸奶社区CAN, the 撸奶社区Helping Hands Society and the Howe Sound Women's Centre.
"We really want to link it into the community," Scheunhage said. "We hope this is part of a new tradition at Quest. We're super interested in linking more and more with the community each year and we hope lots of the community comes out."
