On Sunday (Dec. 1), Platypus Playcentre, a private, Squamish-based daycare facility, officially became the non-profit Platypus Childcare Society.
After six years as a private daycare facility, owners Louise Schell and Stacey Tucker decided to move to a non-profit organization.
"As a not-for-profit organization, we will have access to resources and support that will enhance our programming and opportunities for the children in our care and the wider community," Schell said in a statement issued on Nov. 26. "Platypus Playcentre will continue to provide options in our community for childcare programs based on the philosophy of education through play and increase our participation as active community members."
The management structure of Platypus Playcentre will shift as the organization moves to non-profit status. Schell has taken on the role of executive director, while Tucker is stepping down as program director. The staff will remain the same in both programs.
Julie Miller has been named chair of the society's board, which also includes Christy Allan (secretary), Frank St. Amand (treasurer), Tamsyn Jenkins, Mel Bradley, Amy Buchanan and Kevin Trotter.
