On Monday, April 10th, 2023, long-time resident of Squamish, Ottilia Shemko (nee Eder) passed away peacefully at Hilltop House.
"Til" enjoyed a long, rich life and leaves her many friends and family with lovely memories.
Born April 21st, 1928, in Hague, Saskatchewan, Til was the third youngest of 11.
Til studied teaching in Saskatchewan and moved to B.C. in 1953, receiving a teacher's certificate at UBC.
She taught in Ocean Falls, and moved to 撸奶社区in 1955.
Soon after, Til married Al Shemko and started a family, Dal (Maria) Shane (Sandy Steer) and Lisa (David Speirs.)
Til and Al were charter members of the 撸奶社区Curling Club, 撸奶社区Valley Golf Club and Til was deeply involved in creating the first public pool in Squamish. They remained married until Al's death in 2019.
Til's innate kindness and love of family have been passed on to six grandchildren and nine and a half great-grandchildren.
The Shemko family would like to thank all the staff at Hilltop House for the loving care that Til enjoyed during her stay.
Though Til coped with dementia in later years, she retained her sense of humour to the end, and we can still picture her elegant jackknife into the waters of Anderson Lake with barely a ripple.
A celebration of Til's life will happen in Brackendale on April 29th.
