May Fair set

May pole dancing, crafts and music to be featured
Kirsten Andrews
Mira Alden Hull gets into the spirit of spring at the 2009 Cedar Valley May Fair. This year's annual celebration takes place on Saturday May 8; at 38265 Westway Ave. from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

It鈥檚 kind of timeless, Kirsten Andrews said.听

Children dart around between the May pole dancing, puppet show, tables of baked goods and displays of handmade treasures as musicians fill the spaces in between with tunes. It鈥檚 energetic. It鈥檚 community. It鈥檚 Cedar Valley Waldorf School鈥檚 12th annual May Fair.

鈥淚t is a little bit from another time and it is a little bit from another place,鈥 Andrews said. 鈥淚t is magical.鈥

On Saturday (May 10) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the school is hosting craft tables, Mother鈥檚 Day gift ideas, May pole dancing, music and culinary delights including a German barbecue with bratwurst. The free event takes months of planning, Andrews said. Teachers and volunteers diligently piece together beautiful puppets. Fair-goers often come back to see the puppet show multiple times, Andrews noted.听

This year the school is enjoying a new sponge surface where a once-gravel field was. More than 18 months ago, volunteers and teachers started fundraising for the special courtyard. The school raised $10,000 and was handed a $15,000 grant by The Orcas Anthroposophical Trust to complete the project.

鈥淧arents come and pick up their kids and the next thing you know they are laying around on it, doing yoga and stuff,鈥 Andrews said.

The new surface is in place just in time for the fair鈥檚 cake walk. Similar to musical chairs, participants dart around a course, landing on different numbers. Players landing on the winning numbers get to take home a cake.听

The Pocket Lady will be at the event. She carries lots of little treasures in her pockets that children can pick at, Andrews noted. The event is free, but there is a minimal charge for some of the activities.

The school is located at 38265 Westway Ave. in Valleycliffe. For more information about the school visit www.cedarvalleyschool.com.
