Eleven-year-old Harmandeep Cheema has a lot of to-do tasks on her checklist.
There's soccer, helping out her younger brother, completing her first novel, becoming a doctor, phew and starting up Mamquam Elementary School's first newspaper.
"I have been reading a lot of newspapers and newspaper related books recently," Cheema says, as she browses through The M.E.S. Gazette that she's in the midst of finishing.
By next year, she aims to have the gazette up and running. It's a lofty goal. The newspaper already consists of six pages, covering everything from a story on a new playground to a visit from a feathered friend, Haggard the great horned owl.
"I work on the [newspaper] in the mornings," Cheema says, noting it's a challenge to keep up with the school's busy calendar.
On Monday (May 6), Cheema put on a new hat - Mamquam Elementary School news correspondent for The Chief. Armed with a video camera, Cheema captured the school's singalong with Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield.
Cheema said she's excited about the new role. She plans to keep the community informed on the school's activities.
