Local affordable housing for seniors celebrated

Former residents, directors, administrators gather at 撸奶社区Manor

More than 75 members of the 撸奶社区Senior Citizens Home Society (SSCHS) celebrated the past and future of affordable housing on Saturday (June 4).

Current residents, former residents, board of directors and municipal councillors honoured the 40th anniversary of the SSCHS on a sunny afternoon in the lounge and courtyard of the 撸奶社区Manor, one of the buildings built with the help of the society.

Formed in 1970, the SSCHS helped build 20 units of affordable seniors housing in 1973 and another 50 units by 1976.

Coun. Corinne Lonsdale and Coun. Paul Lalli were present for the celebrations as were a few long-time SSCHS members like chairman Dan Sullivan, administrator Dale Rockwell and board member Jim Craven - who was just 26 years old when he served on the board in 1970.

"That was a really nice treat having him come," SSCHS administrator Laura Modray said.

Bill Rempel spoke on behalf of the 撸奶社区Senior Citizens Home Society and MC'ed the celebrations. He assured attendees the organization is dedicated to maintaining and improving existing services.

"We look forward to continuing to be a major player in providing affordable housing for the senior citizens of 撸奶社区for many years to come."

About 40 current 撸奶社区Manor and Cedars residents enjoyed a hot lunch, coffee and cake while being serenaded by George Francis Ellenton, a Frank Sinatra tribute artist.

"He does Frank Sinatra like you wouldn't believe," gushed Modray.

"Everyone was just amazed with his performance. It was so good, you'd swear that it was him."
