Herring Festival kicks off

Debut event honours Streamkeepers

All Scandinavians, foodies and loves of the 撸奶社区outdoors should report immediately to the Brackendale Art Gallery (BAG) on Saturday (Feb. 8).

The first-ever Howe Sound Herring Festival kicks off at 8 p.m. and it seeks to celebrate the return of spawning herring to Howe Sound and the work of the 撸奶社区Streamkeepers in helping to make that happen.

"The Streamkeepers are always out there doing so much work and they can always use a little more attention," said the BAG's Thor Froslev.

The event includes a presentation from Jonn Matsen of the Streamkeepers and will allow all in attendance to sample the many ways to prepare herring.

"I have pickled herring every day," Froslev said, adding it's both healthy and delicious.

His wife Dorte Froslev is helping to get the various herring dishes ready for the big event and she said she hopes the popularity of the versatile fish will catch on in Canada.

"It's a bit of a hard sell here," she said. "People aren't really used to eating herring here and they think of it as bait fish to catch other fish."

Dorte pointed out that herring is quite nutritious and said 撸奶社区foodies who want to try new dishes will have a great time at the festival. Herring will be rolled, pickled, sauced, soused and baked with all dishes being served buffet style, with apple pie for dessert.

But she said to remember that the event is a chance to thank the Streamkeepers for the work they've done in Howe Sound.

"It's really a celebration for the Streamkeepers," she said. "They've worked really hard on bringing herring back to our waters and any profits will be going back to them."

Tickets for the event are $25 and Thor said to act fast as only 50 tickets are available. Advance tickets can be picked up at the BAG or at Xocolatl Chocolate Creations in Downtown Squamish.
