Help beat cancer tonight

The 撸奶社区Relay for Life gets under way at Brennan Park tonight (June 5) with the opening ceremonies at 7 p.m. The Survivors' and Caregivers' Victory Lap and the Team Parade begins at 7:15 p.m. The lighting of the Luminaries begins at 10 p.m.

The 撸奶社区Relay for Life gets under way at Brennan Park tonight (June 5) with the opening ceremonies at 7 p.m. The Survivors' and Caregivers' Victory Lap and the Team Parade begins at 7:15 p.m. The lighting of the Luminaries begins at 10 p.m. Proceeds from the Relay for Life support research into all types of cancer provide valuable information services and help educate Canadians on cancer risks and prevention strategies. Organizers of the 撸奶社区Relay hope to reach a fundraising total of $130,000. Entertainers during the 12 hour relay include the Don Ross Secondary School Jazz Band, Ali Milner, Susan Holden and Carolyn Grass and Friends. The closing and Fight Back Ceremony will be held at 6:45 a.m. on Saturday. Good luck to all the teams!

An invitation is extended to everyone to attend the 40th Annual Open House at the North Vancouver Outdoor School on Sunday (June 7) from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Paradise Valley. This free family event is a chance to explore a school that runs unique environmental and cultural programs in a spectacular park-like setting. There will be an opportunity to try making paper, canoeing, archery and face painting. NVOS baked goods such as their famous granola bars, cookies and fudge are also packaged for you to enjoy, or to share as gifts. Please take note that pets are not permitted on the property.

When you make a monetary donation to the 撸奶社区Food Bank, Kraft Canada will match your donation dollar for dollar during the National Hunger Challenge from June 2 to 12. Donations are accepted at the 撸奶社区Credit Union or by mail to P.O. Box 207, Garibaldi Highlands, V0N 1T0. The SFB is holding a bottle drive tomorrow and Sunday (June 6 and 7). Please leave your bottles out for pick up or call Sue at 604-848-4316 for pick up or more information.

The all weather fields at Brennan Park are the new location for the Drive-In Theatre on Sunday (June 7) when Indiana Jones will be shown at dusk. The gates open at 7:30 p.m. The sponsors are the 撸奶社区Coast Guard Auxiliary, Walsh Restoration and 撸奶社区Emergency Program. Food and beverages will be available.

The Over the Hill Hikers are asked to meet at the Alice Lake bypass road at 9 a.m. on Tuesday (June 9) for a hike on the Cheshire Cat loop. For more information, please all Heather at 604-892-9003.

Gurmukh Johal, singer, song writer and resident of 撸奶社区will be launching his current CD at the 撸奶社区Public Library on Thursday (June 11) from 6:30 to 8 p.m. His stage moniker, G. Jogi Daduwalia reflects his name and the village he originally came from in India. He has been in India for the production of his CD and will be returning there shortly to perform at weddings and country fairs. His wife Gurjit is well known in the community for her work with ESL storytime at the library, with the South Asian Senior Women's Group and with bhangra dance classes at Brennan Park Recreation Centre. Gurmukh and Gurjit will be performing some of his songs on Thursday and there will be CD's for sale.

All girls are invited to attend the biggest shoe event ever in Squamish! New or used shoes (clean and in good condition) will be auctioned and all proceeds will go to the Canadian Cancer Society. The auctioneers will be Michele Pepper and Denise Imbeau. Entry fee is a toonie and the event will be held on Thursday (June 11) starting at 7:30 p.m. at the Church on 99 (1000 Hwy 99). The 撸奶社区Gardeners' 2009 撸奶社区Garden Tour will be held on Sunday, June 14 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets are available at The Bookshelf, Anna's Attic, Billies' Bouquet, The Adventure Centre, Garibaldi Nurseries and the 撸奶社区Public Library.

Help reduce plastic bag use by joining Help Greener Footprints, which will be delivering one free bag to every home in Squamish. It takes just one hour to deliver reusable bags to 50 homes. To volunteer, choose a time that suits you between June 6 and June 12, choose the neighbourhood you want to deliver to and pick up the bags between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. from 1837 Garden Place, Valleycliffe. I along with many others were saddened to learn of the passing of former resident Gwen Friesen of New Westminster on May 27 after a courageous battle with cancer. Gwen was a nurse at the 撸奶社区General Hospital for many years and she always had the time and compassion to help others having a rough time. Our sympathy is extended to her husband Dennis and her sons Doug and Ross and families.

The 撸奶社区Historical Society's last membership meeting of the season is a potluck, Thursday (June 11) at 7 p.m. at the Tantalus Senior Centre. The guest speaker, Diane Mitchell from the BC Museum of Mining, will discuss how to begin a heritage collection.

The regular meeting of the Hilltop House Support Society will be held on Thursday (June 11) at 9:30 a.m. Family members of residents are especially encouraged to attend. The HTHSS is sponsoring the Strawberry Social on Saturday, June 13 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. There will also be an in-house raffle and a bake sale. Anyone wishing to donate baking is asked to take it to the Activity Room at noon on June 13.

It's dancing at its best when Still Dancing School presents Adventures in Wonderland in the Brennan Park Recreation auditorium on Saturday, June 13 with performances at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are available at Lucky Loonies, The Book Shelf, Still Dancing Dance School, the Anglican Church and at the door.

The Children's Health Fair on Friday, June 12 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre includes kindergarten immunization, dental screening, nutrition information, fun interactive games, car seat check, active zone and much more. The Howe Sound Women's Centre is putting together a fundraiser calendar to help support community programs. Photos of women and/or their children from our community doing what they love to do and are compassionate about would be appreciated.
