Get out the steins

撸奶社区gets set for its second annual Oktoberfest

Bring together wieners, yodelling and some good pints of beer and you've got the makings of Squamish's second annual Octoberfest.

Hosted by the 撸奶社区Montessori School at the Howe Sound Inn and Brewing Co., the Saturday, Oct. 20, event promises to have a truly Bavarian flair, said Gwen Young, one of the festival's organizers. Rolf Brulhart is again the fundraiser's games master, Young noted, which promises to yield laughs.

"The highlight [last year] was being a spectator to all the games," she said. "They were just so entertaining."

The activities included a hammering competition, of which a woman holds the title, a yodel-off, and a wiener-rolling race.

"With alcohol involved, it gets quite comical," Young noted.

Each Oktoberfest-goer gets a pint and stein with the price of admission. Tickets cost $25 and can be purchased at the school, the brew pub or online at www.squamishoktoberfest2012.eventbrite.ca.

Every penny made will go toward the school and its programs, Young said, noting some amazing items will be up for grabs during the silent auction. Last year the fundraiser brought in approximately $6,000.

撸奶社区Montessori School's head count continues to climb, its co-founder Lindsay Graye said. Opened in 2008 with 15 students, as of January the school will have 78 pupils - 13 more youth than last school year.

With a waiting list 25 names long, what the school really needs is space, Graye said. School staff are talking with District of 撸奶社区officials about renting more room within the B.C. Forest Service building, he noted.

"We have enough demand to have a third preschool," Graye said, adding that with an additional 1,000 square feet, he estimates the school's enrolment would reach 125 students.

Such plans need capital, Graye said, and that's where the fundraisers come in. As a leadup to Oktoberfest, on Thursday (Oct. 18), Montessori advocate Trevor Eissler will host a presentation at 7 p.m. at the Eagle Eye Theatre. Tickets cost $10.
