Cedar Valley Waldorf School (CVWS) is Squamish's oldest independent school and this year the school hit a mile marker the parents, faculty and children couldn't be more proud of - 10 years.
Born out of a dream of a small group of inspired parents to bring Waldorf education to their own children, CVWS has grown from one family's living room to its current home, - the old Mennonite church on Westway Avenue in Valleycliffe - with several stops along the way.
To celebrate, the school is hosting an event on Friday (Nov. 16) at 7:30 p.m. at the Brackendale Art Gallery from 7:30 p.m. featuring live music most of the night including the reggae grooves of the Kostaman Trio, deejay beats of Just Sheila and Gypsy fiddler Rachel Virtue-Taylor.
"I hope everyone can come out and not only support our school with its biggest annual fundraiser, but take advantage of the chance to get dressed to the nines and have an amazing night with friends new and old," said Gabriel Alden-Hull, business administrator for the school.
Squamish's Darcy Kirkpatrick, who many recognize from his performances with Between Shifts Theatre, will serve as auctioneer for the live and online auction featuring items such as a weekend for two of cat skiing for two with Backcountry Snowcats, locally guided single and multi-pitch climbing days, ziptrekking in Whistler, and whitewater rafting down the Elaho with Canadian Outback Adventures, to list just a few.
"Because not everyone can make it to the big night, we introduced some exciting changes this year and are making certain auction items - particularly the big adventure items available for online bidding only," Alden-Hull said. "We didn't want to limit all the items of the auction to just the people in the room."
Anyone can visit www.32auctions.com/CVWS10, where they will have until Sunday (Nov. 18) at 9 p.m. to bid on the items, from anywhere in the world.
As an independent school, CVWS receives 50 per cent of the per-student funding the government provides. The rest is made up by a modest tuition and fundraising with events such as this, principal and founding parent Christine Martin said.
Tickets for the Gala Auction and Celebration at the BAG are $10 and are available in advance at the school, at Billie's Flower House and at the door.
