Local businesses are partnering this weekend on a fundraiser in support of an initiative to bring advanced art classes to local public schools.
The Family Art Brunch event, for which seatings are planned on Sunday (Feb. 10) at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. at The Living Room Restaurant, is a fundraiser for the "We Heart Art" project, an initiative being led by Squamish-based Base Camp Art Studios.
For the past few months, Base Camp has been working with 撸奶社区elementary schools to help ensure that professional art instruction is provided during these times of tight school budgets.
"The public education systems of today function under extremely tight budgets with teachers often purchasing art supplies from their own salaries or cancelling art schedules completely," Base Camp officials wrote in a statement.
"We Heart Art" aims to place professionally trained art teachers, curriculum and art supplies in classrooms at no cost to the school district, organizers said.
Michael Gunn, Base Camp co-owner, told The Chief the "We Heart Art" classes should begin soon at Valleycliffe and Stawamus elementary schools. The intention is to extend the program to other Sea to Sky Corridor schools, he said.
Guests at Sunday's event, timed to coincide with Valentine's Day, will enjoy a full Sunday brunch. Adult brunches include specialty coffees, Caesar or Mimosa drinks. Tickets cost $25 for adults, $15 for youths and $5 for those aged six and under.
