The flow of silk ribbons being led around the Maypole spells out spring to Gabriel Alden Hull.
Every year, the self-taught Maypole dancer guides participants through the various steps of the circle dance at the Cedar Valley Waldorf School's annual May Fair. This Saturday (May 12) the school in Valleycliffe will be a hive of activity for the big day.
Besides Alden Hull's free hourly Maypole lessons, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. the event will include two cake walks, puppet plays, a traditional German-style barbecue and a chance to vote on Squamish's best soup.
Musicians Kostaman and Carolyn Grass and Friends play at the fair. There will be a craft sale, providing fathers and their children the perfect opportunity to pick up some Mother's Day gifts, Alden Hull noted.
"So much love and attention have been put into them," Alden Hull said. "They are the kind of gifts mothers would love to receive."
Youth can also make their own take-home gifts. Stations will be set up for people to create bath salts, design Mother's Day cards and dye silk scarves. For the green thumbs in town, the fair will include a plant sale, noted Kirsten Andrews, co-ordinator of the event.
"Gardeners can look forward to vegetable and herb seedlings and young plants as well as perennials, trees and shrubs to add to their yards for very reasonable prices," she wrote in an email.
The community event serves as a fundraiser for the school. Since its founding, the seven-year-old institution's enrolment has more than doubled, from 41 to 84 students. Next year, the school will add Grades 8 and 9.
Now, the school, located in the former Valleycliffe Christian Fellowship church, needs more space. Faculty are fundraising and hope to construct an additional facility by September.
The school is located at 38265 Westway Ave. Volunteers for the May Fair are welcome. Please call (604) 898-3287 or email [email protected]. For more information visit www.CedarValleySchool.com.
