Britannia Mining Museum holds grand reopening

The grand reopening of the Britannia Mine Museum is Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 18 and 19) from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. The new theatre will be presenting a 15-minute feature film throughout the day on he history of mining at Britannia.

In the new visitors' centre you will find a lovely display of gifts relating to mining.

A mine tour is a must! Check out the mineral gallery with its display of rocks and crystals. Take along the family, as there is face painting and crafts for kids as well as balloon animals.

Tickets are $21.50 for adults, $16 for students and seniors, $13.50 for youth and kids five and under are free.

The 2010 Terry Fox Run is sponsored by the 撸奶社区Firefighters Association and has been for many years. It will be held on Sunday (Sept. 19) at the southeast parking lot at Brennan Park starting at 9 a.m.

The run/walk/ride will go along the relatively new district-made trail that parallels Logger's Lane and turns around at the 撸奶社区Adventure Centre and back twice, but there is no requirement for distance.

Last year, 82 participated and 25 volunteers helped out. Over the past few years, the Firefighters have raised anywhere from $1,500 to $2,500 each year and it would be great to surpass that this year. The Save on Foods (撸奶社区management team) will be on site handing out free nutritional goody bags.

The Sound Youth Chorus is back for its second season! This community choir is comprised of girls ages 13 to 18 years. Under the direction of Kelly Coubrough, they meet Sundays from 6 to 8 p.m. at the 撸奶社区Arts Council building in Pavilion Park on Cleveland Avenue.

New this year! The Sound Children's Chorus, led by Melissa Braun is open to boys and girls ages nine to 12 years. This community choir is designed as an introduction to choral singing.

Members of the Over the Hill Hikers will meet at the Brohm Lake parking lot on Tuesday (Sept. 21) for a hike from Brohm Lake to the Fish Hatchery. To join or for more information, please call Heather at 604-892-9003.

The 撸奶社区Gardeners will meet at the 撸奶社区Public Library on Monday (Sept. 20) at 6:45 p.m. Guest speaker will be Tom Baumann, who will talk about growing berries.

Non-members welcome for a $5 fee. Members are asked to arrive early to do weeding at the library.

Enjoy fall in the 撸奶社区Estuary with the 撸奶社区Estuary Exploration volunteer interpreters. The first walk will be held on Saturday (Sept. 18) from 10 a.m. to noon and participants are asked to meet at Third Avenue and the Estuary dike (one block south of Vancouver Street before bridge to the 撸奶社区Terminals).

Everyone is welcome, dress for the weather and take your binoculars along. Dogs are not welcome on these walks. This event is sponsored by the 撸奶社区Environment Society.

All babies born in the past year are invited to a Baby Party at the 撸奶社区Public Library on Sunday (Sept. 19) at 10 a.m.

This is also a chance to meet other new parents. Take part in a library storytime, and find out about other programs and services by the library. There will be cake and coffee at this free event and all babies will receive a small gift.

Storytimes have resumed at the 撸奶社区Public Library with fun, free, half-hour storytimes for babies, toddlers, preschoolers and families. Meet other parents and learn new songs and rhymes.

There are a few small changes to the storytime schedule, so please check the website at www.squamish.bclibrary.ca or visit the library and pick up a brochure.

The Tantalus Seniors' Walking Club will meet at the Stump Lake parking lot on Thursday (Sept. 23) at 10 a.m. for a walk around Alice and Stump Lakes. Remember to take money for parking. For more information, please call Joyce at 604-898-5594.

St; John's Anglican Church is offering an Enneagram Soul Journey Workshop, led by Rev. Wendy Eyre-Gray on Friday (Sept. 24) from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday (Sept. 25) from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The workshop includes enthusiastic lectures, panels, personal and small group exercises, discussion and prayer. The $50 fee includes notes, lunch and snacks and is open to everyone. Please preregister at the church office by Sept. 18 or call 604-898-5100.

Brian Brett is the 2009 winner of the Rogers Trust prize for non-fiction and he will be reading from the book Trauma Farm at the 撸奶社区Public Library on Tuesday (Sept. 21) at 7 p.m.

The Quest University speaker series continues at the 撸奶社区Public Library on Thursday (Sept. 23) at 7 p.m. with Quest president David Helfand speaking on Global Warming - what we know and what we don't know.

Good news! The 撸奶社区Seniors' Centre Caf茅 opens on Monday (Sept. 20) and each day Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is a great place to meet your friends and have a hot meal, desserts and coffee, etc.

Programs available at the Seniors' Centre this month include geneology on the third Monday of the month, morning quilting classes starting Sept. 21, line dancing begins Sept. 22 at 1 p.m., Tai Chi classes on Friday mornings from 9:15 to 10:45 a.m., beginner computer classes start Sept. 27 and drawing and painting classes start Sept. 23 and 24 for anyone interested in helping out with the seniors' fall prevention program.

The 撸奶社区Hospice Society is once again offering a six-week facilitated Bereavement Support Group for those experiencing loss through death.

It is a chance to meet others on a path through loss and grief having similar experiences, thoughts and feelings. It will be held on Tuesdays starting on Sept. 28 to Nov. 2 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Sea to Sky Community Services building at 38142 Second Avenue. The 撸奶社区Community Foundation is hosting a wine and cheese reception on Friday (Oct. 1) from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Adventure Centre to honour grant recipients and to thank the generous donors.

The first annual Sea to Sky Family Fair takes place tomorrow, Saturday (Sept. 18) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park. Admission is by donation to the BC Children's Hospital Foundation.
