The names and birth dates of those who have been born at 撸奶社区General Hospital have begun to appear on leaves and animals that artistically grace the new Birth Wall in the hospital's maternity award.
If you or your loved ones were born there, the 撸奶社区Hospital Foundation is inviting you to add yours - for a chance to support future maternity ward equipment needs and, of course, to record the event for posterity.
"We've just had about eight people who go back to the 1960s, " Tamsyn Jenkins, SHF administrator, said on Monday (Jan. 13). "It's fun because it makes you realize that it doesn't have to be a recent birth.
"You can post your name there no matter how far back they go, as long as they were born at the hospital - or even the old hospital."
Jenkins said 42 names are up on the laminated vinyl wall already, with another dozen or so to come in the next couple of weeks. In all, about 300 leaves of various sizes are available, along with about 25 animals - eagles, owls, raccoons, squirrels, bunnies, deer and bears.
For the past few months the foundation has worked with InBiz on Cleveland Avenue, which donated its time to help create the feature, Jenkins said. The aim is to update the wall about once a month with the names of those who've purchased their places.
Small leaves are available for $25; larger leaves go for $50. Small animals cost $100 and large ones $200, Jenkins said. The aim is to raise about $10,000, with proceeds going toward much-needed hospital equipment - with a focus on what's needed for the maternity ward.
"We wanted to price these to make it available for everyone. If it sells out extremely fast, we may put the prices up the next time, but we always want to keep it affordable for people who live in Squamish," Jenkins said.
The wall was designed so that it can be moved if that part of the hospital is renovated in the next few decades, she said. It's also possible to expand to other walls if the demand warrants it.
