Geoff Payne has been reappointed as UNBC president and vice-chancellor.

The University of Northern British Columbia's board of governors has reappointed Geoffrey Payne to a second term as president and vice-chancellor of UNBC.

"Payne’s dynamic vision and collaborative approach over the past four years have set a strong foundation for his next term," states the announcement from the board.

A founding faculty member of the UBC Northern Medical Program at UNBC when he joined the university in 2004, Payne was appointed interim president in February 2020 during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"During this tumultuous time, he provided steady and reassuring leadership, guiding the university through uncharted territory," the announcement states.

“Under Geoff’s astute leadership, thoughtful guidance and commitment to fostering inclusive relationships, UNBC has entered a period of stability, transparency and open communications,” says Joel McKay, chair of the board of governors. “The university is well-positioned to drive forward initiatives and develop partnerships that will further enhance UNBC’s reputation for excellence as one of Canada’s best small research-intensive universities.”

The decision to re-appoint Payne came after a 12-member advisory committee evaluated his performance. The committee included McKay, other board members and representatives of faculty, students, staff and the Indigenous community.

Payne’s new term will begin on June 28, 2025 and end June 27, 2030.
