Have you seen the structure on Cleveland Ave. and wondered what it was?

The District tells The Chief that three new covered shelters are being constructed in different locations around 撸奶社区to allow people to gather outdoors and undercover in public spaces.

"A growing need for this type of shelter became apparent during the COVID-19 pandemic when gathering outdoors was safer than indoors. These structures also align with council's strategic plan objectives to increase the use of municipal parks and parklets year-round, and funding for the structures was provided through the BC COVID鈥19 Restart Grant," said Mayor Karen Elliott in an email to The Chief.

The structures will be 鈥嬧媗ocated on Cleveland Avenue between Pemberton Avenue and Winnipeg Street, at Stan Clarke Park along Second Avenue, and at the new Dentville Park, once construction of that park is complete.

The Dentville Park is currently estimated to be complete over the winter.

"Each structure has been designed to accommodate various use鈥嬧媠 and will feature a mobile picnic table for flexibility. Additional opportunities to provide covered spaces may be considered as part of future budget decisions. The public is invited to enjoy the space on a first-come, first-served and shared basis and will not require any type of reservation for use," said Elliott.

The total cost of the three shelters is $220,000, according to the District.
