A mother and her 11-month-old child were struck by the driver of an SUV in a Langford roundabout crosswalk with pedestrian lights flashing on Wednesday.

West Shore RCMP were alerted about 2 p.m. to the incident at the roundabout at Peatt Road and Brock Avenue.

The Nissan Pathfinder was travelling at high speed in the roundabout before turning right onto Brock and hitting the 25-year-old mother and child, who was in a stroller, police said.

The Langford Fire Department and ambulance paramedics also responded.

Police said the child did not suffer major injuries but was taken to hospital as a precaution, while the mother was taken to hospital for ongoing care of non-life-threatening injuries.

The 24-year-old driver was ticketed for driving without due care and attention, and the vehicle was towed to undergo a full mechanical inspection.

“It is remarkable and extremely fortunate that after a collision like this the mother and child left the scene without life-threatening injuries,” said Cpl. Mike Jacobson of West Shore RCMP’s traffic section.

“We want to thank all of the witnesses who called 911 right away and stayed on scene.”
