Man charged with murder in Lynn Valley stabbing makes brief court appearance

Yannick Bandaogo spoke only a few words, through a French interpreter at his first court appearance

A man accused of second-degree murder following a knife attack on seven people that left one woman dead made a first appearance by video in North Vancouver provincial court Thursday (April 1).

Yannick Bandaogo, 28, appeared briefly by a video link from the North Fraser Pre-Trial Centre where he is being held in custody, wearing what appeared to be a white padded tunic. His right hand also appeared to be bandaged.

Bandaogo spoke only a few words mostly one-word answers through a French interpreter, and appeared to show little emotion during two brief court appearances, in the morning and afternoon before Judge Patricia Janzen.

His case was adjourned to April 7 to allow Bandaogo to speak with a French-speaking legal aid lawyer.

Duty counsel David Walsoff said he has also spoken to a lawyer in Montreal who will be able to assist Bandaogo's family.

Homicide investigators have said so far they don’t know what motivated the knife attack in and around the Lynn Valley Village library complex on Saturday (March 27) that also left six people injured.

Bandaogo had no connection with any of the victims and no home in B.C., according to police.
