Grieving father wants 'justice for Tori' following alleged Surrey home invasion

A vigil for Tori Dunn is being planned for June 22 at Surrey Bend Regional Park.

A grieving father is calling for justice and claims his daughter was killed by a person who was just released from custody days prior.

Tori Dunn, 30, was in her Surrey home in the Port Kells neighbourhood on Sunday at 10 p.m. when the alleged random attack occurred.

Her father Aron Dunn is limited in what he can share publicly due to the ongoing investigation but questions why the individual was released.

“It was a senseless crime by someone who was released days earlier on bail,” says Aron. “He should never have been on the streets … how does that happen?”

Police arrested a suspect near the residence on Sunday after they found Tori suffering life-threatening injuries.

Homicide investigators confirm the suspect has not been charged in connection to Tori's death but is in custody for an unrelated charge.

“I’m going to hold the justice system accountable for this,” says Aron. “I’m livid.”

Hailey Dunn, her cousin, says Tori was on a wellness journey. She’s in disbelief that this has happened to their family.

“This literally could have been anyone,” she says. “I want it to be very well known that this was a safe neighbourhood. She lived in a nice house.”

Tori was “warm-hearted” and owned a local landscaping business called Dunn Right Landscaping.

A vigil in her honour will take place on June 22 at 7 p.m. at Surrey Bend Regional Park and everyone who knows Tori is asked to attend. Aron says they will also have signs that say “Justice for Tori.”

“I don’t want her to be forgotten,” says Aron. “This could have happened to [anyone]: your niece or nephew or your daughter."

He wants the public to know his daughter was a good person and worked very hard in the community.

“She was fostering dogs, she was an animal lover, she had just returned from a camping trip in the mountains with a couple of friends,” says Aron. “She’s just a beautiful soul. She’s got a contagious laugh and a contagious smile.”

Hailey started a  to cover the memorial service and the costs the family incurs during the investigation.

“She’s going to be missed. She’s going to be really, really missed,” Aron says, fighting back his emotions.

A funeral is being held on June 26 in Surrey for close friends and family.

“We have family coming from all over the country. Some of them are travelling from Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Calgary,” says Aron. “I have a lot of support but at the same time the whole family is very upset.”

Homicide investigators are continuing to investigate her death and are asking anyone with information or video footage to contact the IHIT information line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or by email at [email protected].
