B.C’s  commissioner for teacher regulation has cancelled the teaching qualification certificate of an Abbotsford male teacher convicted of both assault and sexual assault.

In a newly released Oct. 16 decision, acting commissioner Donnaree Nygard said Khaled Hanafi Dardir pleaded guilty in Surrey Provincial Court April 14, 2023 to a September 2020 sexual assault and two assaults in March and April of 2021.

The commissioner said the criminal offences could undermine the confidence of the public in the teaching profession and in the education system.

“His conduct occurred on more than one occasion and Dardir was violent towards an intimate partner and his conduct was a breach of the trust which underpins such relationships,” Nygard said.

Nygard said Dardir was sentenced to 24 months’ probation, to have no contact with the victim, to take counselling as directed and to possess no weapons for five years.

Nygard said the district had disciplined Dardir in June 2020 for harassment and sexual harassment of a colleague. In that case, he was suspended without pay and directed to complete remedial education.

Nygard said in the consent resolution agreement that Dardir had admitted to facts in the notice.

Nygard said if Dardir applies for any teacher qualification for kindergarten to Grade 12 education, issuing officials can consider the facts in the current case to determine his fitness to return to teaching.
