B.C.'s College of Nurses and Midwives has disciplined a nurse found to have poor security practices.

B.C.’s College of Nurses and Midwives has disciplined an Aldergrove nurse for poor security practices.

On Jan. 9, a college inquiry committee panel said it had approved a consent agreement with Gboyega (Kola) Olatunbosun to address practice issues that occurred between January 2022 and June 2023 related to unsafe code white and secure room practices.

A code white is an alert about aggressive or violent behaviour in a medical facility.

The panel said Olatunbosun voluntarily agreed to terms or conditions on their practice, including:

  • a one-month limit prohibiting them from being the sole registered nurse on duty, supervising students, or being in charge;
  • a four-month limit requiring direct and indirect supervision of their nursing practice;
  • developing and working with a learning plan; and,
  • remedial education in therapeutic relationships for mental health nursing.

The college is one of 18 regulatory bodies empowered under the Health Professions Act to regulate health professions in B.C. It regulates the practice of four distinct professions: nursing, practical nursing, psychiatric nursing and midwifery.

Similar legislation in other self-regulated areas such as the legal and notary public professions also allows citizens to know about discipline issues in the public interest.

The inquiry committee said it was satisfied that the terms would protect the public.
