BEIJING 鈥� Canadians could once again threaten the podium on the short track Sunday at the Beijing Winter Olympics, while the Canadian men鈥檚 hockey team will conclude its group phase.
Here are five things to watch at the Beijing Olympics on Sunday, Feb. 13.
Men鈥檚 hockey team concludes group stage
The Canadian men鈥檚 hockey team will finish off its group stage with a match against host-nation China on Sunday. The top finisher from each of the three groups will automatically earn a berth into the quarterfinals, while the best team among the second-place squads will earn the final automatic berth. The eight other teams that don't get an automatic berth into the quarters will have to earn a spot there in the qualification playoff. Canada is in Group A along with the United States, Germany and China.
Medal possibilities on the short track
Canada has a chance to win medals in short-track speedskating again on Sunday. Canada is in Final A of the women鈥檚 3,000-metre relay race, headlined by Beijing 500-metre bronze medallist Kim Boutin. As well, Steven Dubois, who won a silver in the men鈥檚 1,500 metres earlier in the Games, will be on the hunt for another podium finish Sunday, this time in the men鈥檚 500 metres.
Darkhorse long-track Canadian in the women鈥檚 500 metres
Though not expected to be much of a threat, Calgary鈥檚 Brooklyn McDougall could be another pleasant surprise for Canada at the Beijing Olympics on Sunday. Competing in the women鈥檚 500-metre long-track speedskating sprint, McDougall could potentially come up with a podium-level performance if she鈥檚 on her game. The 23-year-old, who's competing in her first Olympic Games, won a silver medal in the 500 metres at the 2020 Four Continents Speed Skating Championships, so the talent is there.
Men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 curling teams reach midway point
Both Brad Gushue鈥檚 and Jennifer Jones鈥檚 Canadian rinks will be competing in Session 6 of the round-robin phase of the men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 Olympic tournaments on Sunday, the halfway point of the 12-session round robin. Canada鈥檚 men will see the United States, while the women will square off against Switzerland.
Monobob makes Olympic debut
The women-only bobsleigh event monobob is making its Olympic debut in Beijing and after a series of training heats, the official heats will begin on Sunday. Toronto鈥檚 Cynthia Appiah and Christine de Bruin of Stony Plain, Alta., are representing Canada in the new Olympic event.
