Are you one of the thousands of Canadians who purchased Peloton exercise equipment his year in order to up your home workout game?
On May 5, Health Canada issued a recall notice for .
The recalled Tread has a running space of 59 inches, a 23.8-inch high definition (HD) touchscreen console and a non-slatted running belt. The model number TR02 is printed on a black sticker located on the end cap in the front of the treadmill deck. The treadmills have a touchscreen and are black with the Peloton logo on the monitor and the side rails.
There were 5,513 of the affected Peloton Tread treadmills sold in Canada. The units subject to recall were purchased between February and May 2021,
Health Canada indicates the safety hazard for this piece of equipment is as follows: "The screws attaching the touchscreen console to the treadmill can come loose, causing it to detach and fall, posing a risk of injury to consumers."
As of May 4, 2021, Peloton had received 83 incident reports in Canada, which includes 3 reports of minor injuries. In the United States, the company has received 18 reports of the touchscreen loosening, 6 reports of touchscreen detachments, and no report of injuries.
Also today in the U.S., Peloton issued a recall for another one of its product, the Tread+ treadmill, a USD$4200 product that was linked to the death of a child and injuries of 29 others.
A media representative for Peloton told V.I.A. via email Wednesday that those products, however, were not sold in this country: "Please also note that the Tread+ and Tread are two different products with two different recall announcements. The Tread+ was only sold in the U.S. and was not available to Members in the UK or Canada."
Peloton is best known for its stationary bikes, but it introduced treadmills about three years ago. Sales of Peloton equipment have soared during the pandemic as virus-weary people avoid gyms and workout at home.
Peloton's Canadian base is in Vancouver.
Customers who own an affected Peloton Tread should immediately stop using the recalled treadmills and contact Peloton for a full refund, says Health Canada. Peloton is offering consumers who do not want a refund the option of waiting for a free inspection and repair that will secure the touchscreen to the treadmill to help prevent future incidents.
