An Abbotsford school vice-principal has been banned from teaching for life after being convicted of possession of child pornography in June.

Commissioner for teacher regulation Howard Kushner released an Oct. 3 consent agreement Oct. 18 that said the Teacher Regulation Branch learned from media reports in September 2018 that Robert Larence Haire had been charged with child pornography offences.

The agreement said he was suspended shortly thereafter.

B.C. Supreme Court records show Haire worked at Abbotsford’s William Fraser Middle School.

The document said that on Sept. 13, 2018, police executed a search warrant at Haire’s home and seized several electronic devices.

Fifteen days later, Haire was charged with one count each of making available child pornography and possession of child pornography.

On Feb. 11, Haire was convicted on the charges. On June 9, Haire was sentenced to 20 months jail on the first count and 10 months on the second with time to be served concurrently.

The agreement said Haire resigned Sept. 21, 2018 and signed an undertaking not to teach.

As part of the agreement, Haire agreed not to apply for any teaching certification.

In considering the appropriate sanction, the agreement said the conduct was at the serious end of the spectrum.

“Haire acted unethically and failed to maintain the integrity of the teaching profession by violating laws that protection minors from sexual exploitation,” Kushner said.
