Until Jan. 17, the B.C. Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will host its second fundraising challenge in memory of Betty White, an animal rights advocate who died on Dec. 31, 2021 at the age of 99.

Last January, the non-profit raised millions of dollars across North America after White passed, including $400,000 for the provincial organization; Jan. 17, 2023, would have been her 101th birthday.

In a news release, the BC SPCA said the money collected from the cause will help animals such as Golden Girl, an English bulldog mix named in honour of White.

The dog was recently found in Richmond and unable to move.

“Golden Girl, or GG as we call her, came into our care when she was discovered by an RCMP officer,” stated Emma Michel, assistant manager of the Richmond BC SPCA animal centre.

“Not only was she limping on her right leg with a very weak left leg, her spine was visible and she had scabs across her body, hair loss and inflammation. GG was also shivering and exhausted and her abdomen was hard and swollen.”

The dog may require leg surgery.

The BC SPCA has an adoption and education centre located in Coquitlam at 1-2565 Barnet Hwy. The Tri-Cities branch can be reached by calling 604-468-4044.
